The Wagah Border comes alive in the late afternoon as the sun begins to set with great zeal and a distinctly nationalist intensity on both sides. The performance begins with the playing of patriotic music and the honouring of the valiant troops who gave their lives in defence of the nation. Jai Hind and Vande Mataram are chanted by the crowd in support, and on the other side, Pakistan Zindabad is shouted in response.
The soldiers from both sides march stiffly in a parade to begin the "Beating the Retreat" ceremony. On either side of the entrance, an infantryman is stationed at attention. Soon later, the massive gates at the Wagah Border are thrown open. The two troops then move in close proximity to one another, exchanging angry looks and miming threats. The flags of India and Pakistan, which are affixed to tall poles at the gates, are simultaneously lowered as they shake hands. At this juncture, the outdoor theater's commotion turns into dead silence. The audience at the Wagah Border is still eerily silent and in awe of the ceremony. As the troops on both sides match steps and compete to outdo one another as part of the ceremonial splendour, the only sound is the hammering of boots. The flags are transported back into the separate camps after being properly folded. After a quick final handshake, neither soldier from either side gives the other a second glance. The great ceremonial is then concluded with the slammed closing of both gates and trumpet blowing.
A sizable gate with an encryption called "Swarn Jayanti Dwar" is located on the Indian side of the Wagah Border and offers a sweeping panorama of the surrounding area. This loud flag-lowering ceremony at the Wagah Border is a real sight that draws a lot of people from both sides of the border as well as from beyond. When visiting Amritsar, it is unquestionably a must-see. In the evening, return to the hotel.
